River Surfing with Randy Fisher

June 3, 2014

Surfer: Randy Fisher

Team: Boardworks

Board: Hynson 7.0 by Boardworks

Location: Gauley River, WV

Wave: Canyon Doors

As we move into summer flows in West Virginia we adapt by getting out the short boards and hand paddling into smaller waves.  This gem on the Gauley River starts dropping in around 1100 cfs.  Ringside parking is available and a beautiful venue consists of a large sandstone ledge for breaks between sessions.  The surf wave is also situated in a large amphitheater surrounded by 100 ft red sandstone cliffs.

I've been surfing the Hynson 7.0 by Boardworks on this river feature.  The "fish" design is perfect for river waves.  The thickness and wide tail keeps the board on the wave.  River waves tend to be less "retentive" then ocean waves therefore a little extra volume and length is necessary.
